Post Christmas Snow

While we were resting up from the day’s excess at Ed and Meredith’s in Berkeley Heights, we kept and eye on the weather reports. Blizzard conditions were forecast for NJ and metro NYC on Sunday 12/26. So we decamped promptly and drove back to Hudson where identical snow falls and predicted wind levels were just treated as “severe winter weather”. Right on schedule yesterday afternoon, the winds picked up and the snow came.

We entertained ourselves as we usually do on Sunday evenings with a visit to our favorite watering hole, Swoon, where Dave knows to set up two Dewars on the rocks when we walk in the door. Much to our surprise, given the rages outside, the place was jumping.

When we walked home at about 8 pm there was already 5 or more inches on the ground or blowing around in the air.

Here is what things looked like this morning:

Fortunately for me, my timing was just right. Two neighbors came to my rescue with their snow blowers. So I had a relatively  easy time with the fluffy stuff.

Flag Day in Hudson – June 12th 2010

Karen took a bunch of pictures of the June 12th Flag Day fesitivities here in Huidson. She turned some into a movie.

For the uninitiated it is important to know that this parade and associated hoopla is the major public event of the year. Warren St. is filled end to end. The parade lasts for over two hours and the whole event is capped off with fireworks that run on and on a la Boston’s Fourth Fourth of July boondoggles.

Here is a link to Karen’s movie on the Davis Orton Gallery website.

Hudson Walks, Crosswalks, Handicap Ramps?

Crosswalk at Opera House in Hudson NYHudson held a formal opening for a refreshed pedestrian crosswalk at the Opera House on Warren St. Thursday 6/3/10. This was a big enough event to get a front page position in the local bleat, The Register Star, with its story, “City promotes health by kicking off ‘Foot Traffic Friday’”.

I am glad to see the first pedestrian right of way sign that I have ever seen here. These had become a common sight in Cambridge over the last decade and drivers for the most part had become accustomed to the indignity of having to stop.

Hudson, with its usually sparse traffic, offers plenty of opportunities for both pedestrians and cars to pretty much use the streets as they see fit. In fact, though I would never do this in NYC or less so in Boston, here I regularly cross the street in mid block with just a casual glance to the left for an oncoming car then, as I approach the mid point of the street, a right glance for cars coming from the opposite direction. But, now in the 300 block of Warren I will have to be back to minding my pedestrian manners.Hudson crosswalk without handicapped access ramp

As I was admiring the crosswalk I realized that neither side of the walk had ramps for handicapped access. Then, thinking about the sidewalks in Hudson in general, I realized that ramps at intersections and crosswalks are not to be found. How could it be that decades after legislation demanded access for handicapped people elsewhere, Hudson has not found opportunities to put them in just as part of normal maintenance?

New Fence at 32 Warren St.

The 19th century cast iron fence at 32 Warren St. was seriously damaged a couple of months ago by an errant car. Fortunately good insurance and a diligent search for a company that could build a replica of the iron fence has produced results. The new sections of the fence contained a combination of steel, cast iron, and water-jet cut steel trim at the bottom. Welding the steel to the iron fence is not as easy as just cranking up your garage welder. Nevertheless, the craftsmen who performed the work made it look very easy.
