5/3/2019 – work, drive to NYC, Nyla lacrosse, documentary

Friday

UTMH work in the morning. Met with Tony Kieraldo to develop new social media program. David A. Has already indicated he doesn’t want to spend money on it even before seeing the proposal. Turns out he is once again funding the company so this brings out his craziness about money. Then, telecon with a private equity firm. We aren’t mature enough to be of immediate interest. David once again closed the door with his closing comments. A pointless exercise. Seth and I had a telecon with Troy Web about project status. Then lunch with David. He once again expressed himself about the social media campaign. This despite the fact that the revised proposal won’t be forwarded for review until Monday.

Jumped in car at 1 pm for ride down to NYC and Nyla’s lacrosse game at Horace Mann. Talked with Matt Almeida on the way down.

Trinity won the game 8-7. Nyla scored 3 goals. Girls lacrosse is a strange unsatisfactory game.

Drove into Harlem in time to get to the Maysles Documentary Center for a showing of The Feeling of Being Watched by Assia Bondaoui. Andrea had tickets.

This is a personalized story of the investigation of FBI surveillance and harassment of a Muslim community outside of Chicago in the late 1990s into early 2000s. Very good. Discussion following was also stimulating. Mentions of “politics of respectability” – reminds the same in the history of civil rights earlier. Also the need to get beyond the objective journalism trope.

4/22 – 4/23/2019 – mostly sick…trip to PT….

Monday and Tuesday

Spent most of these days mopping about. Low energy.

Tuesday, UTMH team meeting was buoyant. Sam missed it due to some call. Otherwise Wexelman and Ole held the floor. Some good ideas about details of how doctors use the UTM:RPM reporting tools.

Saw Anna Marie Zeitsman at Fish and Game Physical Therapy. She had me walk around the building. Noticed that my right hip is slightly immobilized and so I am swinging my whole body forward skewing the gait a bit. Overall she still finds things to be in good shape with further opportunities to put off hip replacement. She also noticed that my toes don’t stretch up as much as they should. 5 degrees deflection instead of 10. This could account for my two recent tripping events on the tennis court. I am shuffling my feet.

Bad night of little sleep. Cold slowly getting better.

Parking ended up to be about 1/2 mile from the Barnes. Saw this strange truck across the street.


Sent photo to Matt Almeida as a joke. He replied:

That is GREAT! Only in Philly.

 

I remember all the food trucks in Philly, but I have never seen a background check truck. 

 

Looks like you may have stumbled onto a new franchise model.  A cheesesteak and criminal record check truck. The back half can sell cheesesteaks and you can order your criminal record check from the front half while you wait for them to cook it.

At The Barnes

Is the slurping sound part of the design??

The iron works caught my eye. Turns out that Barnes had worked at the layout and arrangement of the objects in these room for decades. All part of a pedagogical approach (see John Dewey) to display not that of a museum. Then I noticed that the iron works were really arrangement of objects with their own shapes in counterpoise to various aspects of the paintings. The ironwork is a decorative element. There is not an intent to display them on their own.

Left Philadelphia and drive to Berkeley Heights for a visit with Ed and Meredith. Talk about their plans to move to the Seattle area, land and construction versus buying existing, Meredith’s retirement plans complicated by changes in retirement plans by the school system. We had roast lamb. It was Easter afterall. Met the new dog. Now forgotten the name. Energetic part beagle, 6 years old. Parker was in his usual question mode.

Returned to Hudson in time to go to Swoon for a drink with Dave. Doors closed but we got let in. Several people we know from Catskill were there. Ole walked in.

4/20/2019 – HAL BoT meeting, drive to Philadelphia, Noah dances….

Saturday

Cold continues to hang in there. Breakfast at Bob’s.

Just a quorum at 8. Waiting to get started at 10:15 am.

Board of Trustees meeting upstairs in the Senior Ctr.  Introduced and got approval for new Fundraising Committee. Emily gave her illustrated annual report. As always very good. Positive numbers and results galore. The slide that listed all of the organizations with whom the library collaborated during the year is especially startling.

Left to go to Philadelphia at 12:30pm. Caught up with Nyla and Andrea outside the church where the Iron Gate Theater is located around 4pm. Aliyah, daughter of ???, who is attending Howard U. was also there. Talked, gabbed, Nyla did homework. Noah showed up for a few minutes.

Then, less Noah we had dinner at Baby Blues BBQ. Food not very good.

Over the top salsa dance program. Lots of lights, sound, action…. audience screaming… quite a surprising new activity for Noah. Show began at ~8:30 ended at ~10:30pm.

We stayed at Hilton at Penns Landing. Had drinks and a snack at bar. Noisy ac system in room.

 

4/14/2019 – web projects, diary, tennis, dinner at Barnwood, photos from Holland

Overall a sluggish day. Sore throat, low energy. Worked on various new entries for projects in the diary. Old writing that seems germane even after ten or more years. Me and Religion and Are We Over Taxed..??..

By chance I had seen photos from these fields on Facebook in the last couple of days. I pointed out in a comment that there are over a billion bulbs planted by hand. When Karen and I went on a tour of this area in early March 2017 we saw men dangling prone in a box hauled across the field by a tractor planting the bulbs by hand. The tractor driver was standing in the field nearby having a smoke. The tractor is guided automatically over the field by GPS or laser location.

Tennis with Ted at 4pm. Dead on my feet. Stopped by 5pm due to rain.

Late, sluggish start. Emails to Nick Zirpolo and Torrey about adult learning 

Coffee with Julia Back at Cafe Le Perche. HAL board member. Ozzie. Runs marathons. Marketing events for an OpenSource software company. Very interested in anything to do with fundraising. Sharp. Lives at 421 Warren St. 

Spent bulk of day reading and writing about adult learners. Responded to Nick Zirpolo, Torrey and a Lithuanian academic. 

Nap. HAL Exec Commitee mtg at Miranda Barry’s house. Mostly budget talk. 

Walking home from Union St. mtg.

Karen is off to writing event in Rhinebeck. I had Red Chopstick food.

3/5/2019 – work, colonoscopy prep,and tennis

Tuesday 3/5/2019

UTMH team meeting. Quite brief because Seth did not attend. Spoke with Ball Consulting about dropping monthly retainer and going to a time and materials basis for future press releases. They will work on a white paper this month.

Went to CMH to meet with Lynn Carollo about colonoscopy in April.

Total Tennis at 6:30. Played doubles, three sets. Included Nicholas, a young pro who knew that I take lessons from Saif. Played quite well. Many good rallies. Tony Sarowitz, Franz ?? and Kevin ??  were partners also.
