2/8/2019 – Miami – Wynwood, Rubell Museum, Stonewall Museum Ft. Lauderdale, State Park, David Murphy

Friday 2/8/2019

Drove to Wynwood section of Miami. Breakfast at local eatery.

 

3008 NW 2nd Ave Miami

Walked around a bit then went to Rubell Family Collection.

Quick return to Wynwood Walls street art murals. Not very interesting. These murals and much of the street art  are a bit worn out stylistically.

Drove to Ft. Lauderdale.

Went to Winston neighborhood to see exhibit at Stonewall Museum of Meg Birnbaum’s

Stopped for a brief pause at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park on the beach. Walked to beach, looked enough to satisfy Karen that she had been to the ocean.

Split a beer. Arrived at David Murphy’s condo by 5:30 at 411 N. New River drive 31st floor. Great views. Apartment looks settled into now. Amazing marble floor com-pelted. Chatted with David about various. Went to dinner at Sky Thai restaurant on East Los Olas Blvd around the corner. Very good food and service. heard more of the story of David’s life – how he got started in the farming business in NYC, then Boston. Mentioned that his building in Somerville receives offers to purchase of $5 million. he is still holding

2/7/2019 – Breakfast in Brickell, Abort Trip to Miami Beach, ICA Design District, Mark and Sue Haven

Thursday 2/7/2019

Breakfast at Granier Bakery on Brickell Ave. Walked back via grocery store where we picked up salads for dinner. Then jumped in car to drive to Miami Beach to look in at Bass Museum. Drove around looking for a parking spot for 30 minutes with no success. Left and drove to Museum Design District and the Institute of Contemporary Art  where we were to meet up with Mark and Sue Haven a bit later.

Walked around this district of expensive stores. Stopped at Bel Air Fine Art. Mostly just flashy stuff. Jeff Coons. Lenticular photographs. Two large photos of Morgan Library and Prado created from hundreds of individual shots. Only thing of lasting interest are a series of painting in revers perspective on the second floor by Patrick Hughes.

 

2/6/2019 – Swap Shop, Homestead, Coral Castle Museum, Miami

Wednesday 2/6/19

Drove to Swap Shop and Drive In Theatre on Sunset Blvd in Ft. Lauderdale.

Looked for a new pocket knife and clip on sunglasses. Unsuccessful. Place is an enormous flea market with many permanent shops and then outdoors people unloading stuff from their vans, pickups, and station wagons. Lots of immigrants. You could find anything here.

Then drove some 60 miles south to Homestead FL to Coral Castle Museum. This quirky tourist attraction features the monomaniacal work of one five foot tall man Ed Leedskalnin from Latvia.Lunch nearby at Salvadoran Cuisine restaraunt.

Drove back north to downtown Miami to hotel. Atton Brickell Hotel. 1500 SW 1 Ave Miami, FL

Watched part of Jurassic Park on the roof in the pool garden area. Terrible movie.

2/2/2019 – Cambridge, Griffin Museum, friends

Saturday 2/2/2019

Breakfast with Linda Larson. Helped her with voicemail.

Lunch with Ruth and Paul Richards at Paddy’s Pub in West Netwon. He looks gaunt and slowed down. She is recovering from difficult diverticulitis with infection. Nevertheless they are in good spirits.

Then off to Museum of Fine Arts. Got there too find a line out onto Huntington Ave of people waiting to get in. Turns out the first weekend in each month the Bank of America buys everyone with a bank card free admission. So, off to the Griffin Museum with Esther. Not very interesting.

Stopped by Legal Seafoods in Tech Square for a cameo drop in where Jimmy and Dorothy Nelson’s extended family were celebrating Matt’s birthday. Her brother the lawyer looked quite depressed. 

Dinner at a trendy, over-priced Italian joint on Main St., Sulmona. I was very grumpy.

2/1/2019 – Getting ready to be off to Cambridge

Friday 2/1/2019 – Very COLD

Setting off by noon for annual Super Bowl followed by trip to Florida for cousins’ dinner at Flo’s pad.

Checked in with UTMers. Packed. Left Hudson by noon. Arrived at Esther’s by 3. 

Saw The Favorite at Landmark. Disappointing ending. 

Then dinner. 

Over-rated food.

Wednesday – 2/15/2107 – Florida trip

After waffles at Flo’s condo we set off for Miami. 

Stopped at three private museums in the Wynwood district: de la Cruz Collection,  The Rubell Family Collection, and The Margulies Collection.

Biggest impact was seeing so much work by Anselm Kiefer at the Margulies and de la Cruz. (de la Cruz would not allow photos.) See Anselm Kiefer – 2/15/2017 in Projects here (opens new tab).

Tuesday – 2/14/2017 – Florida Trip

Started with breakfast looking over Flo’s water feature pond with roaring pump across the way where a sink hole had opened.

Drove to Wakodahatchee Wetlands Preserve – we’ve been here before. Lots of birds, reptiles, etc. One mile walkway over swamp. Continue reading →

Monday – 2/13/2017 – Florida Trip

Left St. Augustine Beach and headed for Delray Beach to meet up with cousin Flo for 1pm lunch. Arrived on time. 

Dinner with Karen’s cousins: Ken Barman, girlfriend??, Howard and Judy Barman, Carol and Bill ?? ,  Florence Shulman. Two sets of cousins are missing: Jordie and Ruthie ?? and Barry and Honey Barman. Jordie can’t be pried very far from his joint near Ocala.

Sunday – 2/12/2017 – Florida Trip

Left Smithfield NC after drive by of the Ava Gardner Museum. Only people well into their 70s recognize her name let alone feel compelled to visit a museum of memorabilia. 

The land along 95 is the coastal plain. Low and swampy. Not much to look at. Lots of very large billboards in SC. Where is Lady Bird Johnson?

Detoured into Savannah GA for quick bite to eat. Karen got oysters. We renewed our liking for this town. SCAD is bigger than ever. 

Drove 500 miles to St. Augustine Beach. Excellent meal at the “original Cafe Eleven”. Nice ambience. Hard to imagine music in this small venue.
