Karen still quite sick with a cold. NYTimes with breakfast. Wrote a response to Joe Keenan then posted on currentmatters.markorton.com . “How Much Money Would It Take to Eliminate Poverty in the US.” – Spent much of the morning working on the search function for the volunteer site for the library. Then wrote instructions.

Walked up to Subway for sandwich and salad for our lunch. Stopped along the way to talk with Joan Damiani. Her art production is very high. She said that she sold two paintings in January. “Never happened before, probably won’t happen again. But, energizing.”

Also ranted about Trump.

New use of this term. Store on Columbia near chocolate store/

At 7th St. park. Had a medallion saying it is a Plymouth?

One or then worst looking buildings in Hudson

Ride to Fairview Booze and the Bank

Went on errands and took drive down Kips Lane in Greenport where there is a large trailer park. Deer herd grazing.

Breakfast at Tanzy’s. Talked with Tisha and her husband about their trip to Iceland. Revised notes of Thursday’s HAL history talk by Carl Whitbeck. Rick Rector was there too.

Walked up to library for Board of Trustees mtg. Again struck by the tremendous change in composition of the board. Term limits have that effect.

Meeting in the Senior Ctr room 2nd floor

Stayed at library until 1pm working on HAL volunteer website. Rushed home. Drove to Kinderhook for a demo outside Congressman Faso’s office. More people than a week ago in Hudson. Occupy Wall St style crowd repetition of speaker’s words. We left after about 15 minutes. Ran into Sue Ciafullo at her house wheee we had coincidentally parked  she has just sold her house. Moving to Charleston SC at the end of March.

Stopped at The School for the latest exhibit.

Here are my favorites:

Made tuna casserole for dinner.

Saturday – 1/21/2017 Women’s March in Hudson

Took Karen to train at 7:15am. She is off to join Andrea and Nyla for the arch in NYC. Went to Bob’s Diner for breakfast. Sat next to a guy with a torn rotator cuff eating pancakes one handed. About to be retired truck driver. Talkative, but not insensitive enough not to leave me alone when I returned to my New York Review of Books.

Read Sunday NYTimes.

Walk at Art Omi.

The 5 architects presentation was vacuous. Lots of new sculpture along with some favorites. Very nice weather.

Demo

Back to Hudson for a demonstration in support of Obamacare at the 7th St. Park. Organized by the County Democrats. Started on time, well organized, reasonably fervent.

Potluck Dinner at Rasners.

Cooked Indian dishes. New guy in charge of Olana with his partner. Miranda Barry and Charlotte??. OK evening, but these are not people with whom we are socially at ease with.

Saturday – 1/14/2017

Finance Committee at HAL in the morning. Anna Rachminov, Marie Rasner, Miranda Barry and Emily. Very good cheery mtg.

Noticed exhibition of sculpture from Hudson High School students. I took lots of pictures for a posting on the HAL website. Later discovered that I had missed some in the Teen Library. Will have to return Tuesday.

Hudson Pride Event at High School

Then, quick stop at Hudson Opera House to see opening of pictures of Alleys of Hudson. On to HAL for opening of Jim Peppler photos.

9/29/2004 – Zinn & Chomsky at Bunker Hill Community College

Zinn & Chomsky at Bunker Hill Community College – 09/27/04

We went to Bunker Hill Community College Monday night to hear Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn speak on the topic, “Is There Hope In This Desperate Time?”, at a fundraiser for the Homeless Empowerment Project. Our friend Linda Larson, former editor of our local street paper, Spare Change, took us along with KC Chapman from Jackson MS.

Zinn and Chomsky are two very vigorous guys even at there advancing ages.

The big take aways for me are the need for continuous political action whether it is around the war in Iraq, health insurance, homelessness, racism, whatever. Second, not surprisingly, they reiterated and supported the notion that the Republican and Democratic parties are just two different wings of a ruling elite that doesn’t want regular people involved in important issues. Chomsky said that if you are in a swing state you should go to the polls and vote for Kerry. Otherwise, vote for a candidate you like or abstain from the “quadrennial circus”. The important thing is to do something politically active on a regular basis. Voting, even in a real democracy, is just a five minute activity.

The forthcoming series of presidential debates with Kerry and Bush will illustrate how little anyone will talk about issues and how much focus there is on trivial “character” issues.

Chomsky illustrated this in the ongoing health care crisis. The US spends far more per capita on health care but produces results that are not better than Cuba or many other 3rd world countries. Attempts to change the gross inefficiencies of the health insurance and drug companies are always beaten back with phrases like “this isn’t practical”. This is just code language that the health insurance and drug company lobbies in Washington don’t want their times at the trough interrupted (or ended in the case of the useless, incredibly wasteful insurance industry).

It was bracing to hear two radicals speak so clearly and forcefully on public issues. It refocuses me on how little discussion of real issues happens in the US.
