2/7/2019 – Breakfast in Brickell, Abort Trip to Miami Beach, ICA Design District, Mark and Sue Haven

Thursday 2/7/2019

Breakfast at Granier Bakery on Brickell Ave. Walked back via grocery store where we picked up salads for dinner. Then jumped in car to drive to Miami Beach to look in at Bass Museum. Drove around looking for a parking spot for 30 minutes with no success. Left and drove to Museum Design District and the Institute of Contemporary Art  where we were to meet up with Mark and Sue Haven a bit later.

Walked around this district of expensive stores. Stopped at Bel Air Fine Art. Mostly just flashy stuff. Jeff Coons. Lenticular photographs. Two large photos of Morgan Library and Prado created from hundreds of individual shots. Only thing of lasting interest are a series of painting in revers perspective on the second floor by Patrick Hughes.

 

2/2/2019 – Cambridge, Griffin Museum, friends

Saturday 2/2/2019

Breakfast with Linda Larson. Helped her with voicemail.

Lunch with Ruth and Paul Richards at Paddy’s Pub in West Netwon. He looks gaunt and slowed down. She is recovering from difficult diverticulitis with infection. Nevertheless they are in good spirits.

Then off to Museum of Fine Arts. Got there too find a line out onto Huntington Ave of people waiting to get in. Turns out the first weekend in each month the Bank of America buys everyone with a bank card free admission. So, off to the Griffin Museum with Esther. Not very interesting.

Stopped by Legal Seafoods in Tech Square for a cameo drop in where Jimmy and Dorothy Nelson’s extended family were celebrating Matt’s birthday. Her brother the lawyer looked quite depressed. 

Dinner at a trendy, over-priced Italian joint on Main St., Sulmona. I was very grumpy.

7/12/2018 – Karen’s Photos in PRC Show

Thursday

The Photographic Resource Center’s annual juries show Exposure 2018 at Lesley University’s VanDernoot Gallery, University Hall, 1815 Mass Ave, Porter Square, Cambridge held its opening reception today. Karen was one of 11 photographers exhibited. Her series “Strangely Attracted” were featured. Lots of friends and people from her art world showed up. 

3/12/2017 – Clark and Mass MOCA

Sunday

Karen is worried about the snow storm forecast for Tuesday into Wednesday. Possible impact on our departure.

Trip with Dave Drake to The Clark and Mass MICA. Big exhibit of Japanese wood block prints st Clark.

Mass MOCA was as usual underwhelming and a bit annoying. It’s part of the contemporary art puffery machinery. Vast spaces and poles of money to support the production of art that is not very interesting  one wouldn’t plan a revisit to see any of it.

Lunch with beer at a place in the complex run by a Brian Flach’s brother Danny. 

 

Tuesday – 2/14/2017 – Florida Trip

Started with breakfast looking over Flo’s water feature pond with roaring pump across the way where a sink hole had opened.

Drove to Wakodahatchee Wetlands Preserve – we’ve been here before. Lots of birds, reptiles, etc. One mile walkway over swamp. Continue reading →

Sunday – 2/12/2017 – Florida Trip

Left Smithfield NC after drive by of the Ava Gardner Museum. Only people well into their 70s recognize her name let alone feel compelled to visit a museum of memorabilia. 

The land along 95 is the coastal plain. Low and swampy. Not much to look at. Lots of very large billboards in SC. Where is Lady Bird Johnson?

Detoured into Savannah GA for quick bite to eat. Karen got oysters. We renewed our liking for this town. SCAD is bigger than ever. 

Drove 500 miles to St. Augustine Beach. Excellent meal at the “original Cafe Eleven”. Nice ambience. Hard to imagine music in this small venue.

Saturday – 2/4/2017

Breakfast at Esther’s house. Picked up Ellen Feldman and drove to Addison Gallery in Andover.

Excellent exhibitions. Disturbing series on the Manzanar Internment Camp by Ansel Adams, very propagandistic. Surprising show about Triple Candie group that showed things in a warehouse on 126th St in Harlem during the ’70s. See the slide show of things I liked here. Also revisited a Charles Sheeler painting Ballardvale. The ship models in the basement are still a treat.

Karen’s Clams

Drove down to Wollaston Beach in North Quincy. Both beachfront clam shacks were closed for the season. Duh!! Found Burke’s Seafood just off 3A in North Quincy center. Meltdown averted. Food was good, ambience excellent local.

Seen in front of Catholic church around the corner on 3A. Superbowl is tomorrow. Guess Jesus is on the Patriot’s side.

I’m Not Your Negro – movie

Saw this at Landmark in Cambridge with Ellen Feldman. Outstanding, compelling. Baldwin, as noted earlier in the Fall 2016 at HAL workshop, still speaks to us.

Dinner at the Friendly Toast

A Kendal Sq. eatery favored by Elfel. Drove to Belmont to stay with Bill and Nancy. Arrived on schedule at 8:30 pm sharp.

A throwback. Still good. Still cheap.

 

Wednesday – 2/1/2107

Went to CMH for UTM meeting about Remote Patient Monitoring project.

Very succcessful meeting to kick off the patient pilot. Lots of good ideas from the staff.

Drove to Albany. Lunch at Iron Gate restaurant just across the street from the Albany Institute of Art and History. Wandered around Rte 43 going east before connecting with 9 to go back to Hudson.

Saturday – 1/28/2017

Breakfast at Tanzy’s. Talked with Tisha and her husband about their trip to Iceland. Revised notes of Thursday’s HAL history talk by Carl Whitbeck. Rick Rector was there too. 

Walked up to library for Board of Trustees mtg. Again struck by the tremendous change in composition of the board. Term limits have that effect. 

Meeting in the Senior Ctr room 2nd floor

Stayed at library until 1pm working on HAL volunteer website. Rushed home. Drove to Kinderhook for a demo outside Congressman Faso’s office. More people than a week ago in Hudson. Occupy Wall St style crowd repetition of speaker’s words. We left after about 15 minutes. Ran into Sue Ciafullo at her house wheee we had coincidentally parked  she has just sold her house. Moving to Charleston SC at the end of March.

Stopped at The School for the latest exhibit.

Tuesday – 11/8/2016 – Election Day

Meeting with Chad Weckler at CEDC and Michael Tucker about commercial kitchens and Hudson-Creative. Arrived at the end of the meeting due to my calendar entry screw up. Tucker is loud and mostly about his own opinions. 

Had coffee afterward with Chad. He told me of space offered to us at 3rd and State. 

Drove to NYC. Arrived about 2pm. At MET Breuer – old Whitney. Diane Arbus and Kerry James Marshall. image

Drove over to PioPio restaurant for Nyla’s 14th birthday party. Andrea, Noah, & John too. Very cheery time. 11082016-nyla-bday-1

Back to Hudson in time to watch some of the election returns at Spotty Dog. Went home at about 10. I went to sleep about 11. Woke up at 3am to discover a headline from NYTimes announcing Trump’s victory. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for Hilary C I am distressed.
