Drove to Albany.

Along the way we stopped in Kinderhook at jack Shainman’s The School Gallery for the “Winter in America” show. Very diverse but in the end unfocused and not very interesting. Liked the di Suvero sculpture on the lawn.

At the Albany Institute of History and Art. David Drake joined us.

The Capital Region in 50 Objects – surprisingly good.

Drove to Kinderhook to The School, the Jack Shainman Gallery  to see the new exhibit=, Winter in America. Somewhat underwhelming. I spent time with the Mark di Suvero sculpture on the front lawn, “Chonk On”

Albany

Went to the Albany Institute of History and Art. Saw  “The Capital Region in 50 Objects“. Surprisingly interesting.

1172015-AlbanyInstitutelogo 50 color copy-f482e982It’s not often that you see a video game and a chamber pot together in an exhibition. It’s even more unusual when both are highlighted as historic artifacts. But the Capital Region of New York has such a varied history that this pairing, along with forty-eight other items, will partner together to tell their stories in The Capital Region in 50 Objects.

Each region of the country has its own distinctive history and culture that set it apart from others. The Capital Region of New York—consisting of Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga Counties— is no different. So what is it that gives the Capital Region its identity? What historic events, people, ideas, and objects have shaped its character? And even more challenging, is it possible to represent the Capital Region’s distinctiveness in fifty objects? The Albany Institute began asking these same questions more than three years ago when it sent surveys to nearly sixty museums and cultural organizations throughout the region. Through partnership with the Times Union, the Institute was also able to ask readers to submit their ideas based on such themes as Arts, Sports, & Entertainment; Science & Technology; Politics; Industry, Commerce, & Transportation; Life & Society. Then, after reviewing the responses, a committee worked to select fifty topics to represent a diverse history of the region. Our new exhibition, The Capital Region in 50 Objects, will show the results of this collaborative project.

The process of selecting fifty objects to represent the diverse history of the region was not easy, but thanks to the participation of numerous museums, historical societies, business entities, and private individuals the Institute has been able to assemble fifty objects that tell an amazing story of the Capital Region over the past four hundred years. Some of the objects in the exhibition will be immediately recognized as Capital Region icons, such as Albany’s beloved Nipper, the RCA dog that looks down from his rooftop perch on Broadway. Other objects, such as the Witenagemot oak peace tree from Knickerbocker Historical Society in Schaghticoke, may be little known to visitors, but the old oak tree represents a profoundly important event that took place in 1676 with the formalization of a peace treaty among English colonists, Mohawks, Mohicans, and Hoosacs, all of whom inhabited the area around the junction of the Hudson and Hoosick Rivers.

What else is in the exhibition? Let’s just say you’ll find objects such as an early automobile and a ticket booth, two cannons and a rocket booster, plus much more. Come and see if your favorite objects made the list.

In addition to the exhibition, family programs, special lectures, and demonstrations will  broaden our appreciation of the Capital Region’s distinctive identity.

The Capital Region in 50 Objects was planned in partnership with the Times Union. This exhibition has been made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts. Additional funding has been provided by the New York Council for the Humanities and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

Dave Drake met us there. Then went to a sports bar for lunch with Liz Allen.

We then went off to see “Bridge of Spies” a very good Hollywood movie at the Spectrum 8.

Followed up with dinner at Vietnamese restaurant downtown. Van’s on Central Ave.

Pop Up Art (Protest?) at Linear Park

On our way down State St. we came to the new linear park that runs over to Warren St across from the Hudson Opera House. We had earlier noted how unfriendly this is: “Accessibility in New Linear Park“.

When we reached the ramp system, we found a large array of Facebook comments on 8.5×11 pinned to the fence. Not clear who the author is.

Single file on all but major street sidwalks

Drove to Cambridge and Somerville. Karen for her Soup Group meeting and me to meet Mike Beach at Artisan’s Asylum, the makerspace.

The piles of snow are impressive. Drove down Kinnaird St. to see what the old haunts looked like.

Went for lunch with Esther Hanig at the Druid in Inman Sq. She has a new job as the Director of the Union Sq. Main Streets project. Then I drove Karen to Ellen Feldman’s house. I went on to Artisan’s Asylum in Somerville to meet with Michael Beach. Aside: Michael told me that Peter Flowers is in hospital with pneumonia and stroke. Currently intubated and being treated for pneumonia primarily.

Artisan’s Asylum – Somerville, MA

Learned the importance of social factors. Involvement and presence of renters drives much of the activity. Many of the courses are taught by renters. Lots of interaction and mentoring by renters. Saw this in action with Michael and his projects.  Met Derek Bradbury, President.

There is a corporate makerspace in the next building, Greentown Labs

Picked up Karen at Moira Barrett’s house in Cambridge. Drove home. Arrived 11:30pm.

Sunday – 2/1/15

Back to Bill and Nancy’s house in Belmont. Weather forecast is for large snowstorm to move in so we care considering leaving to return to Hudson tonight and not be stuck here until Tuesday morning.

Good talk with them over Iggy’s pizza before game. Game was very exciting with Patriots pulling it out in a very unpredictable ending in the last seconds.

Drove to Hudson that evening. Began to snow seriously in the Berkshires on Mass Pike. Near white out conditions on Taconic at end.

3/8/2014 – Ice Boating on the Hudson

Winter continues with extremely cold weather. The Hudson has been frozen to such a thickness that the ice boats have been dragged out. Our friend Paul Stewart who has an iceboat of his own alerted us to this rare gathering. We went for a walk on the river down the river off 9H in Barrytown, maybe a half mile north of the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge. Dave Drake went with us. The Hudson River Ice Yacht Club has been around since 1885.
