4/17/20 – Friday – various and list of Zoom meetings

Sent notices out to HAL board. Spent most of morning doing digital housekeeping.

Also time spent learning new things about Notability. Interesting feature of recording a lecture or meeting while making notes. The notes are synced to a time stamp during the recording. So, you can tap on a note and it moves the playback to that point.

Bought lunch at Cascades.

Talked with Kim Bach outside her store Verdigris. She complained about lack of workers to help with her online business. Her part time employees are financially better off on unemployment than coming back to work for her part-time. Continue reading

1/30/2020 – DOG, web project, tennis, dinner

Thursday

Got up at 5:30 am. Worked on updating DOG website for the next season. Then worked more on the timeline here.

Tennis lesson at 11 am.

Troubled left knee was concerning. But once I got going it proved to be just a little annoyance occasionally. Saif introduced the idea that I should be flicking my wrist during my ground strokes. I seem to have interpreted earlier instructions to indicated keeping the wrist immobile during the stroke. Flicking the wrist involved letting the racquet drop below the ball and the flicking the racquet in an upward direction as the arm carried through the stroke. Will have to work further on this.

Big revelation was the time we took with my serve. He pointed out that I am rushing the whole arm motion from then time I toss the ball in the air. Now that I toss the ball quite far up I can slow down my back swing and the wind up to only accelerate during the last quarter or so of the whole swing path. This worked wonders. I hit one ball after the other over the net most landing in very close to the service line. I also had time during the serve motion to think about where I was hitting the ball.

HAL Meeting with Mayor Kamal Johnson

Held meeting with the mayor to provide him with an overview of library operations, future plans, and budget. He is very young, Emily did her usual good job. Gary Sheffer spoke about the History Room. Theresa Parsons chimed in; Bill Stenehjem was present. Toni Koweek represented the Friends and gave a longer than necessary description of their activities. Very good meeting. He is quite familiar with the library but hopefully this gives him a better view of ours issues and the overall program.

Dinner with SJ Williams and Pauline Decarmo

Went to Barnwood. Were horrified at the announcement that there was no fried chicken available. Did eat our dinner. Lots of chatter. Followed up with visit to Dave Drake at Swoon for drinks. Very crowded at the bar. Pauline and I talked about her billing practices.

12/15/2019 – pre-Christmas dinner

Sunday

We had a dinner for 14 people. Dave Drake cooked the duck breast and red cabbage. Karen made various dishes as did Mark. Anne Bertrand-Dewsnap made a desert, others brought wines and hors d’oeuvre. Ed, Meredith, Maggie and Parker came up from NJ. Ted and Anne came too. Pauline Decarmo, Susan???? Unfortunately none of Dave’s kids came.

6/30/2019 – Tanglewood Brass Extravaganza, tennis, drinks with David Drake

Sunday

David Drake came by to pick me up for a trip to Tanglewood for a Brass Concert. Wew especially like the percussion piece and the Symphony for Brass by Malcolm Arnold. Musicianship was extremely high. Good turnout for a Sunday morning. Demographics – average age in the 50s. We were back in Hudson by 1:30.

Pauline Decarmo minded the gallery.

Tennis

Played wtih Ted. He got ahead in our set 4-1, then I got it back to 4-5 serving for the set at 40-love when a big downpour ended our play.

Drinks

Karen came home early from her trip to Lowell MA to meet with Soup Group. We had a drink at Swoon. Also an appetizer: Roasted Cauliflower …spicy lamb ragout, shaved pecorino, herbs. Very good. Worth emulating.

Evening sun on Warren.

5/18/2019 – HAL BoT meeting, Caroline Wilder, tennis, art exhibit Ghent, dinner

Saturday

Edsel outside of Bob’s Diner

Edsel outside of Bob’s Diner

Breakfast at Bob’s Diner. Karen went off to Center for Photography in Woodstock to do portfolio reviews.

HAL Board of Trustee meeting. Only Gary Sheffer and Steve Dunn were missing. Talked about the upcoming Funders Party, the Gala, Long Range Planning, and Fundraising Committee. Pretty uneventful. 75 minutes.

Gallery sitting at DOG.

Caroline Wilder stopped by. We talked about how she can manage her small business in a manner congenial to her personality and business needs…..She wants to keep her dress business small and personal. Doesn’t need Quickbooks that she isn’t comfortable with anyways. I suggested a simple paper journal for the 200-300 transactions a year. When she pulled out a MacBook Air I remembered that she is a digital native, so extended my suggestion to Google Sheets or Apple Numbers. “Whatever technique is comfortable.” She can get her other financial information from her checking account, credit cards, Venmo and other digital finance tools. She left sayin g that she felt relieved about how to keep track of her finances and her business. I told her she had to come back in  couple of months to show me how she is doing.

Pauline Decarmo came over at 3pm to finish out the gallery duty. I played tennis with Ted from 3:30 to 5pm. Starting to feel as though we are getting back into the swing of outdoor summer tennis.

Dave Drake came by for dinner. He had been back and forth to Chicago during the week unloading Lauren Schaeffer’s shit. We drove out to the Art School of Columbia County in Hollowville section of Ghent. Nick Tipple and Erika Born had work on display.

5/17/2019 – work, work, dinner out

Friday

UTMH – met with Pauline Decarmo about collaterals printing. Notes to new sales people. Re-wrote the Tinkering with Capitalism essay. Mostly re-arranging text and eliminating extraneous material.

Telecon with Troy Web. 25 minutes wasted on project management tasks they should know how to do and be doing them. Then rambling discussions, frequently amongst themselves about various trifles. We have to get rid of them. They are expensive but not contributing.

Met with Michael Queralt with David and Seth. 3 hour discussion. He is very experienced technologist and entrepreneur. Next steps may be interesting. He is knowledgeable of the healthcare marketplace. Nice guy to boot.

Spoke with Tony Kieraldo about renewing the utmhealthcare.com website.

Sent note to Linda McNutt and Mike from Kach Inc. about the repairs to the front lattice and gate.

Wrote note to Sam and Dan Sapoznick about blockchain technology mentioned by Queralt.

Walked up to Swoon for dinner. Big crowd at bar when we walked in. Gave up on sitting at the bar and sat at a table for dinner. Two Dewars and two dinners $85. Ole Breuning and Crystal Heinz came in. Ole and I spoke of UTMH matters. I told him that we had been stuck for twenty minutes on the name of a guy sitting at the bar . Finally recalled, Victor Amendola. Ole said, “It was a senior moment.” I corrected him, “It was a senior intermission.”

Karen noticed these fire connections with upside down medallions.

5/13/2019 – rain, gray, cold, work, nonfiction book group

Monday

Nasty weather continued. Finished reading Susan Orlean’s The Library Book for tonight’s book group meeting. More writing in the essay Tinkering with Capitalism – homeostasis. Physical therapy with Anna Marie Zietsman. Lots of muscle and ligament stretching right hip. Met with Seth around UTMH matters. Received draft of marketing pieces from Pauline Decarmo. Was appalled to discover how bad the writing was. Sent note to Seth with angry comments.

Library nonfiction reading group was small. But discussion of Orlean’s book was buoyant.

Saturday – 1/7/2017

Left for NYC at 7:40am. Breakfast at West Taghkanic Diner. Was snowing heavily by the time we got to Mt. Vernon on way to Queens Museum. Somehow we had not checked the forecast. Turned around. We’ll skip Noah’s basketball game. Back in Hudson just after noon.

Spent most of afternoon working on lightbox plugins for new DOG site.

Took walk up Warren in what seemed to be really cold temperatures though it was only 22 degrees. Went to art opening at 510 Warren. George Spencer.

Drink at Spotty Dog in honor of Pauline Decarmo’s 51st birthday.

Ended evening watching the pilot for TV series 30 Rock.
